February 2015 Luncheon – Valentine Bingo
VCRTA members enjoyed a wonderful lunch along with great conversation before a few short presentations. Lastly, members enjoyed the traditional February Valentine’s Bingo fun with “don’t clear your board” bingo games. Winners were slow to start but winning picked up quickly and everyone had fun.
April 2015 Luncheon – The Amazing Wabash River
The Vigo County Retired Teachers Association members had an enjoyable luncheon followed by a historical presentation on the amazing Wabash River. While VCRTA members see the Wabash River regularly today our view does not match that as described by Caleb Lownes in 1815 as “generally perfectly clear and transparent – exhibiting a clean, gravely bottom.”
Brendan Kearns, of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, provided the presentation of the history of the river, how Terre Haute’s Fairbanks park incorporated the river into its design, the changing wildlife in and around the river, and famous accidents that have occurred in/on the river.
VCRTA 04/16/15 Supports Battle of the Books
VCRTA members volunteer for the annual Vigo County School Corporation Battle of the Books completion. Members serve as time and score keepers.
VCRTA 05/06/15 Excellence in Education
VCRTA member Glenda Hilton was awarded the Vigo County 2015 Excellence in Education award by the Vigo County Education Foundation for her work as a life long educator, volunteer, and mentor.
VCRTA 05/08/15 Receives IRTA Recognition
The Vigo County Retired Teachers Association was selected by the Indiana Retired Teachers Association Public Relations Committee as a winner for the Press Release (Honorable Mention) and Website (Outstanding) awards.
June 2015 Luncheon – Master Gardening
VCRTA members enjoyed a wonderful luncheon and an enlightening presentation by Vigo County Master Gardeners. The presentation provided an overview of horticultural principals and gardening subjects as well as provide an overview of the Wabash Valley Giving Garden. The Giving Garden is a way for Master Gardeners to raise vegetables that are then donated to local charities.
New officers were also inducted at the June luncheon. The incoming officers include Mel G. (Treasurer), Brenda W. (Secretary), Diana S. (Vice President), and John G. (President).
August 2015 Luncheon – Autumn Service Project and Performing Arts Workshop
VCRTA members participated in their autumn service project, the annual School Supplies drive. The supplies collected this year were donated to Terre Town Elementary School. In addition, VCRTA members donated over $120 to the Salvation Army Schools Supply fund.
Students in the 2015 Performing Arts Workshop presented Fussin’ an a Feudin’ during the luncheon. Special guest Holly Pies and Karen Crispin provided background information about the summer program and received VCRTA’s support for their ongoing work.
October 2015 Luncheon – Financial Planning
VCRTA members enjoyed a wonderful lunch along with an informative presentation on financial planning. Certified Financial Planner Steven Songer provided an excellent overview on how to maintain a person’s financial independence and discussed growing and protecting your assets, outliving your assets, exhausting your assets after becoming disabled, and dying with insufficient assets.
VCRTA 11/18/15 Salvation Army HERO Award Recipient
The Vigo County Retired Teachers Association was awarded the 2015 Salvation Army HERO award in grateful appreciation for generous service to the community and to the welfare of our fellow man in making Christmas happy for others.
The HERO award was presented as part of the 2015 Red Kettle campaign kickoff. The Salvation Army has a $200,000 goal for 2015.
November 2015 Winter Service Project – Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign Bell Ringing
Members of the Vigo County Retired Teachers Association volunteered to ring the bell as part of the association’s winter service project to support the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign. Forty volunteers rang the bell over five days at the Terre Haute Kroger South location. The Salvation Army noted that just two hours of ringing a bell at a red kettle can raise enough money to feed a family of four for a week.
This year the VCRTA happily volunteered over 80 hours and collected donations to help the Salvation Army reach the 2015 Red Kettle campaign goal.
December 2015 Luncheon – Holiday Music Celebration
Members of VCRTA were given a special presentation of holiday music by the Terre Haute South Vigo High School Choir under the direction of Paul Ellison.
VCRTA members whom had passed away during 2015 were recognized during the Necrology ceremony. Volunteer hours for 2015 were collected and will be reported to the Indiana Retired Teachers Association and to the association during the February luncheon.
